Question
Is it a religious requirement that the groom’s family come to the bride’s place or city of residence to get married and not vice versa?
Is this a requirement of the Sharia that the groom must come and get married in the bride’s city, and the bride cannot get married where the groom resides?
Is this notion purely cultural or is this a requirement in our din?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
No, the groom does not have to get married in the bride’s residence. This is a cultural practice. However, both families should amicably and happily agree to one place.
There is a fiqh principle; Customs and societal norms are recognized in Islamic law.
