Question
I’m from India, where it’s common for gold jewelry to feature peacocks and elephants. I’m considering selling such jewelry to fund making my own animal-free pieces. Is it permissible in Islam to sell these items for profit and use the funds to create new jewelry?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is permissible to sell your personally owned animate-shaped jewelry at a cost price. If you have sold it with profit, you should give the excess to charity (sadaqa). What is impermissible is to buy and sell animate featured jewelry. You may want to consider melting it down and using it to make a new piece of jewelry.
In Sharia, sculptures that resemble living beings are not permitted. Items such as jewelry or toys that bear a likeness to living beings with distinct features like eyes, a nose, a mouth, ears, and body structure are considered impermissible for sale.
