Question
My child is past the age of puberty yet really struggles with dressing modestly. I have encouraged her to wear loose clothing when she was young, but she struggles with it at public school. Is it permitted for me to take her clothes shopping? I am worried about facilitating her in sin, as I know she will not wear loose clothing. Is it permitted for me to allow her to buy less modest clothing (with clear disapproval) and forbid anything alluring in any way? I am worried being forceful will push her against Islam.
Answer
Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for not wanting to assist in sin and may He guide your daughter to see the beauty and modest dressing.
Assistance in sin
It isn’t sinful to buy her immodest clothing, as they could be worn along with more modest clothes. The better option might be to give her the money to buy it herself, as there is potential assistance in sin. Encourage her to surround herself with religious friends who dress modestly and help her understand the beauty of modesty, in sha Allah, she will see it your way soon.
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “There is never any obscenity in a thing, but it mars it, and there is never any modesty in a thing, but it adorns it.” [Ibn Maja]
