Question
Is it appropriate to describe the Qur’an as a ‘love letter’ from Allah, considering the term’s non-romantic connotations and its use as a metaphor?
Answer
Thank you for your question. I haven’t seen this term used, and I don’t recommend using it. The term love letter downplays its tremendous linguistic miracle, its divinely revealed messages, the authentic stories of the past, the upcoming terror and bliss that it foretells, as well as the inexplicable, untold blessings that each letter contains.
Quran
Rather, understand the Quran through the words that we have been told:
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The superiority of God’s words over all other words is like the superiority of God over His creatures.” [Tirmidhi]
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “You shall not return to Allah with what is more virtuous than what came from Him.” Meaning the Qur’an. [Tirmidhi]
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) also said, “The truest of word is the Book of Allah.” [Nasa’i]
And he said (Allah bless him and give him peace), “The Book of Allah contains right guidance and light, and whoever adheres to it and holds it fast, he is upon right guidance and whosoever deviates from it goes astray.” [Muslim]
And Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection, it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Surah Ali-Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection, they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.” [Muslim]
The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Purity is half of faith. Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) fills the scales, and SubhanAllah (how far is Allah from every imperfection) with Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah) both fill that which is between heaven and earth. And the prayer is a light, and charity is a proof, and patience is illumination, and the Quran is a proof either for you or against you. Every person starts his day as a vendor of his soul, either freeing it or causing its ruin.” [Muslim]
And Hasan al-Basri (tabi`) said, “There was not revealed a [single] verse from the Qur’an except that it has a Dhahir [an apparent] and Batin [inner] and every letter has a value [measure] – and for every value is an ending.” [Baghawi, Sharh us Sunnah no. 1/21]
