Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Why did Allah show me dreams and signs about someone I prayed for deeply if it wasn’t meant to be? Despite years of heartfelt prayers and seeing positive changes in him, everything ended suddenly, leaving me shattered. How should I understand this and move forward?

Answer

Thank you for your question. You must understand this by submitting to Allah’s will, exerting patience, and aligning your desires with whatever your Lord chooses for you.

All Good

Narrated Abu Hurayra: Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)   said, “If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.” [Bukhari]

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “How peculiar is the matter of the believer! Everything is always to his advantage! And that doesn’t apply to anyone save a believer. If he enjoys a benefit, he is grateful, and it is even better for him; if he suffers a difficulty, he is patient, and it is even better for him.” [Muslim]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “A Muslim does not encounter fatigue, tiredness, concern, sorrow, injury or grief, or even a thorn which pricks him without Allah expiating his errors for him by that.” [Bukhari]

Based on the above, we should always have a positive outlook on our experiences in life and know that every test is good for us if we are patient.

Dreams and Healing

There is no guarantee that your dreams were a sign for you to incline toward a certain course of action. Sometimes, the answer to an istikhara does not lie in a dream, but rather in a feeling or facilitation of a matter.  See those details here:

Also, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) warned us of blindness when we are in love. He (Allah bless him and grant him peace) told us, “Your love for a thing causes blindness and deafness.” [Abu Dawud]

Please give yourself time to heal. I encourage you to perform the Prayer of Need consistently, even if a little. Ask Allah to heal your broken heart and to replace what you have lost with someone far better. Find comfort in the daily recitation of the Quran, prayer, and dhikr.

Reflect on the meanings of Sura Yusuf and his trials and how much your patience will be rewarded. Nothing is lost with Allah, not one bit of it. Remember that whatever man is destined for you is guaranteed, is the best one for you, and no one can stop it or delay it.

Dua

Please say this supplication every morning and evening seven times.

حَسْبِـيَ اللّهُ لا إلهَ إلاّ هُوَ عَلَـيهِ تَوَكَّـلتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ العَرْشِ العَظـيم.

Allah is sufficient for me. There is none worthy of worship but Him. I have placed my trust in Him, He is Lord of the Majestic Throne.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Allah will grant whoever recites this seven times in the morning or evening whatever he desires from this world or the next.” [Abu Dawud]
