Question
I worked at a supermarket where some customers left weighable items in personal bags, bypassing tare adjustments and increasing grocery costs. Although store policy required removing items or asking customers, it was often overlooked. Is there any need to rectify this, given it was a common practice and not enforced?
Answer
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
Those customers are being wronged for paying more than they should and the store policy should have been followed, especially since they are completely in line with Islamic values. [Quduri, Mukhtassar]
Allah, Most High, says:
“Woe to the defrauders! Those who take full measure ˹when they buy˺ from people, but give less when they measure or weigh for buyers.” [Quran, 83:1-3]
Thus, you should repent for failing to implement the store policy, as it was your responsibility, and strive to do better in the future.
Allah, Most High, says:
“O believers! Honor your obligations.” [Quran, 5:1]
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
